Monika Sattler

Hi, I am Monika,

I am a gravel and road cyclist as well as a cycling record holder; being the first woman to cycle the 3000 km Vuelta a Espana at the same day as the male professionals, just hours beforehand.

I started cycling at university and after one year I had to choose between a career at the World Bank or being a professional cyclist. I chose professional cycling and raced a few races in Europe (incl. Amstel Gold Race and the German Hill Climb Champs) before I realized that professional cycling is not what I wanted as I was not driven by external competition. I was seeking the challenge within myself. So instead of looking for competition, I looked for mentally tough challenges which I found in gravel racing such as Unbound Gravel, Almanzo, Trans Iowa. When I moved to Europe, I rode the Haute Route Triple Crown (3 Haute Route Rides back-to-back, 21 days in total) as the only female that year and one year later, I decided to set a cycling record: Being the first woman to cycle the 3000 km Vuelta a Espana at the same day as the male professionals, just hours beforehand. 80% of the people believed it was impossible.

Now, I help others to push their limits and break barriers to go for the seemingly impossible. I am also a TEDx speaker and help organizations to genuinely create a diverse and inclusive work environment with a focus on the sports industry. I am driven to make real impact in the world, especially when it comes to creating a playing field of respect, openness, courage, kindness and authenticity.

Originally from Germany, I have lived in the USA, Australia, Spain and now Switzerland. I have worked for the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and IBM and have a M.A. in International Security from Georgetown University and a M.Sc in Kinesiology from University of Minnesota.
